I'm working on the website right now so this section is very pared down for the time being.
Who are we? We are a small hobby kennel located in Warwick, RI. We've had Shibas since 1994 and been breeding on a small scale since 1997. We believe in breeding Shiba Inu who are healthy in mind and body and who conform to both the Nippo and AKC standards for Shiba Inu. We are members of Beikoku, The Canadian Shiba Inu Club, and a founding member of New England Shiba Fanciers Club. We believe in breeding quality Shibas, not quantity. If you are looking for a Shiba and I don't have any, ask me for recommendations and I will be happy to find someone with puppies for you. DO NOT get fooled by slick websites - most of them are glorified puppy mills. See "Philosophy" for more information about us and our Shibas.
Our Vet - we use Wolf Rock Animal Health Center, a holistic vet located in Exeter RI - if you live within 50 miles, you should use them too. We made the switch to Wolf Rock a couple of years ago once we decided to take a more holistic approach to health. We do titers instead of yearly vaccines, we feed the best food we can and we believe prevention is the best medicine. Wika, who is 13 years old, looks and acts like a young dog and Kai, who is 11 years old, doesn't look or act a day over 5.
What we feed - We used to feed Timberwolf Ocean Blue, which is an acceptable food, but last year we switched to a combination of Orijen Six Fish Formula and ZiwiPeak Venison. We supplement with Icelandic Kelp and Salmon Oil for our picky eaters. We also give chicken necks three times a week, on average. We buy our food from http://doggiefood.com - we don't have to ship it since they are in RI. Even if you need to ship, we recommend them. Great prices, great customer service and they carry all the high-end brands - including raw foods and mixers.
Health checks - our breeding animals are typically given the following health checks: Knees, eyes, thyroid and hips.
Goals - we have many, but the basic goal is to have awesome dogs. By awesome, I mean dogs who can function in the family unit, are healthy as possible and are excellent physical examples of the breed... ie they need to look like Shibas. And not just any Shibas, but we breed dogs who can compete in both AKC and Nippo shows.
How we raise our "kids" -- all of our dogs are house dogs. My Shibas run in two packs -- I do have some dog aggressive dogs who can't run with the others, which is why they have their own pack. The bed is packed with Shibas at night, though the boys sleep on their dog beds since the girls won't let them on the bed. I don't expect my Shibas to make friends with strange dogs, but I do expect them to tolerate strange dogs and to get along with the dogs in our pack. All of my Shibas are born in my bedroom and are handled from birth. They're all part of the family and are expected to behave themselves. Shibas are tough to raise, but I firmly believe you get back what you give. And that takes us to...
Philosophy - still working on this - it's getting very long
Take a look at our photo gallery to get a good idea of what our Shibas look like and how they're raised.
We also have a youtube page and try to update videos regularly.
